First Nine Weeks

ARP = 20%

Literature:
Suspenseful Short Stories :  “The Necklace,”  “The Tell Tale Heart,”  “The Monkey’s Paw,” “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow,”
excerpts from Dracula (class sets)
NonFiction :  from “Travels with Charley” (Prentice Hall Textbook)
Point of View:  Flowers for Algernon (Prentice Hall Textbook)

Writing:
Power writing, personal narrative, classificatory essays (advantage/disadvantage and compare/contrast), associative writing,
sequencing, elaboration, vocabulary, mechanics
Project:
“Trunk in the Attic” due during third week



Second Nine Weeks

ARP= 20% of grade

Literature:
Introduction to Shakespeare (Prentice Hall Textbook)
Poetry (Prentice Hall Textbook and varied selections)

Writing:
Main idea, propaganda, persuasive essay, vocabulary, and mechanics

Project:
Poetry Notebook due during seventh week



Third Nine Weeks

ARP = 20% of grade

Literature:
American Essays (class sets)
 The Diary of Anne Frank (Prentice Hall Textbook)
Writing:
Intensive TAAS review, character analysis, point of view, distinguishing between fact and non-fact, author’s purpose,
vocabulary, mechanics



Fourth Nine Weeks

ARP = 20% of grade

Literature:
Mythology (Prentice Hall Textbook and class sets)
That was Then, This is Now (novel by S.E. Hinton, students’ copies preferred)

Writing:
Creative writing, elements of literature, cause and effect, vocabulary, mechanics

Project:
Reader Response “Flip Book” due during seventh week
